Susan Herman of Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford Named President of the Association of California Nurse Leaders

STANFORD. Calif.— Susan Herman, DNP, RN, NEA-BC, CENP, Magnet Program Director for Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford, is the 2015 President of the Association of California Nurse Leaders (ACNL).

As president, Herman will guide ACNL as it strives to improve patient care delivery, develop nurse leaders and advance the professional practice of nursing in California. She will also be a voting member of the California Hospital Association’s Board of Directors.

“I am truly honored to be elected president of ACNL and continue the outstanding work of nurse leaders who have come before me,” said Herman. “In today’s rapidly changing health care environment, nurses are taking the lead in developing strategies to provide quality health care to our patients and communities.”

Herman has been employed at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford in a variety of roles during her twelve year tenure. Most notably, she led the development of the hospital’s Bass Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Diseases. 

Currently the Magnet Program Director, Herman ensures that the hospital continually meets the requirements of the prestigious Magnet designation. A Magnet-designated hospital is recognized by the American Nurses Credentialing Center after demonstrating excellence in patient care in more than 35 areas of focus. Only eight percent of US hospitals have achieved Magnet designation. As Magnet Program Director, Herman champions this venture.

For the past ten years, Herman has been actively involved in ACNL. Prior to her presidency, she served on the board of directors and numerous committees. On the local level, Herman co-founded ACNL’s South Bay chapter.  She holds a Bachelor’s degree in nursing from Pennsylvania State University, a Master’s in nursing administration through a joint Stanford University/UC San Francisco program and a Doctorate of Nursing Practice through a collaborative program offered by the California State Universities in San Jose and Fresno.

The Association of California Nurse Leaders is a nonprofit professional organization representing nurse leaders in hospitals, health systems, academia, research and business. For more than 37 years, ACNL has affected positive change for nursing and health care by developing nurse leaders, advancing the professional practice of nursing, influencing health policy and promoting quality health care and patient safety.
