World Prematurity Day Celebrated at March of Dimes Prematurity Research Center, Stanford University School of Medicine

STANFORD, Calif. — In honor of the first-ever World Prematurity Day®, November 17, the March of Dimes president visits the nation’s first transdisciplinary research center dedicated to prevention of premature birth. Worldwide, 13 million babies are born early every year and one million die before their first birthday. Reporters are invited join lab & NICU tour, interview guests and possibly meet some parents of babies in the newborn intensive care unit at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford. Partner organizations in Europe, Africa and Australia are calling on governments worldwide to reduce death and disability caused by premature birth.   • Dr. Jennifer L. Howse, president of the March of Dimes.
  • Dr. David Stevenson, principle investigator at the March of Dimes Prematurity Research Center at Stanford University School of Medicine and professor of Pediatrics/Obstetrics and Gynecology, Stanford University School of Medicine and Lucile Packard Children's Hospital.

WHAT: Tour the laboratory associated with the March of Dimes Prematurity Research Center at Stanford University School of Medicine. The local lab will play a key role in the global fight against premature birth. This Center, newly created in March, has brought together specialists from diverse fields ranging from neonatology and genetics to computer science and artificial intelligence, to identify the causes and prevention of the serious and complex problem of premature birth. Tour of Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford to speak with families coping with the premature birth of their child.
