Welch Road Traffic Pattern Changes to Finalize; North Pasteur Drive to Close; South Pasteur Drive to Become Two-Way, Two-Lane Road

Changes to Accommodate Construction for Stanford Medical Center Project

PALO ALTO, Calif. — WHAT: In order to advance the Stanford University Medical Center Renewal Project, significant changes will occur on Welch Road and Pasteur Drive, two of the main arteries into the medical center.

On November 5, 2011, concrete barriers (K-Rail) will begin to replace the plastic traffic delineators on Welch Road, finalizing the transition of Welch into a one- way, one-lane road going West from Quarry Road to Pasteur Drive. This change will be live by Monday, November 7th and will remain in effect for two years, after which time it will revert back to a two-way road. Also beginning November 5th, work will begin to convert South Pasteur Drive into a two-lane, two-way road. North Pasteur will close between Blake Wilbur Drive and Sand Hill Road in order to accommodate construction activities. These changes will begin with plastic traffic cones in order to shift traffic and will be in full effect by Monday, November 7th. Access to Stanford Hospital & Clinics will be maintained on Pasteur Drive. Information ambassadors will be on site to assist with patient and visitor way-finding.

WHEN: The traffic pattern changes will begin to shift on Saturday, November 5th. All changes to Welch and Pasteur will be complete by Monday, November 7th. 

WHERE: Welch Road between Quarry Road and Pasteur Drive; North Pasteur Drive between Blake Wilbur Drive and Sand Hill Road.

WHY: The Stanford University Medical Center Renewal Project will rebuild and modernize facilities that are the foundation of our community’s healthcare services. This includes rebuilding Stanford Hospital & Clinics and the Emergency Department; expanding Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford; replacing Stanford School of Medicine laboratories; and renovating Hoover Pavilion, the original Palo Alto Hospital. The first step of this project is the Welch Road Utilities Project, which includes utility construction work, the widening of Welch Road and other improvements to support the future facilities.
