Genetics at Stanford Medicine Children’s Health provides comprehensive diagnostic evaluation, clinical management, and genetic counseling for children and adults with known or suspected genetic disorders. Genetic services are provided by physicians, genetic counselors, nurses and other health care providers. Our large team of genetic experts provide services in many specialty areas.
Genes are the basic physical unit of inheritance. Genes are passed from parents to offspring and contain the information needed to specify traits. Inherited conditions can be caused by genetic changes.
Geneticists are physicians with specialized training in clinical genetics and genomics. They evaluate, diagnose, manage and treat individuals with inherited conditions across all ages from birth to adulthood.
Genetic counselors are health care professionals who combine the science of medical genetics and genomics with the art of counseling. They provide a wide variety of services including review of medical and family histories; assessment and education about genetic risks and options for genetic testing; and counseling to help patients understand genetic tests and results.
We will gather information about your pregnancy, medical and family histories. Geneticists perform a physical exam to learn about any features that could suggest a genetic condition. We will work with you and your family to offer, order and interpret genetic testing if appropriate. Our goal is to help you understand test results and next steps, and to answer all of your questions about what the genetic findings mean for you, your family, and any future children.
