At Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford, we recognize the critical role of dialysis in the care of children with kidney failure. The majority of children who come to our hospital for kidney transplant do so while receiving dialysis, and we believe optimal dialysis is a key contributor to the transplant program’s excellent survival rates.
Our 3,000 square-foot dialysis center houses six dialysis machines plus a training area where parents can learn how to care for their children on dialysis at home. Because the pediatric dialysis center is located inside the hospital, our team is close by and can monitor the patients and respond to any problems. We also provide the most advanced dialysis water purification technology in the nation so children receive treatment using the purest dialysis water.
Children receive highly specialized nursing care and attention from a multidisciplinary team in a cheerful and stimulating setting, which is especially important for families who are coming from outside the Bay Area for a kidney transplant. The expertise of the pediatric dialysis team keeps patients in optimal physical condition, while the fun activities boost patient morale. Children can access the internet, play games, watch movies, spend time with child life therapists, school teachers, and even do homework in an area overlooking a sunny, landscaped courtyard.
