We offer comprehensive multi-disciplinary evaluation and treatment to children and adolescents with obesity

Pediatric Weight Clinic

The Pediatric Weight Clinic is an outpatient service of the Center for Healthy Weight. We offer comprehensive multi-disciplinary evaluation and treatment to children and adolescent with obesity. Our mission is to lead children and adolescents to:

  • Improved weight control.
  • Overall better health and quality of life.

The Weight Clinic team works with patients and families to develop a treatment program personalized to their situation and goals.

Following a complete evaluation by the clinic’s multidisciplinary team to understand the potential causes and complications of the patient’s condition, the team works with families to develop a family-centered plan for weight reduction focused on diet and activity goals. The treatment plan may additionally include:

  • Behavioral counseling.
  • Visiting other specialists for medical comorbidities (health problems that exist along with obesity).
  • Weight loss medication.
  • Bariatric surgery.

Treatment decisions are made jointly by the Pediatric Weight Clinic team and clinicians across multiple clinical areas.

Patients in the Weight Clinic can also choose to participate in the Pediatric Weight Control Program. Classes are taught weekly over six months in a group setting and focus on lifestyle changes. Compare the Pediatric Weight Clinic and Pediatric Weight Control Program.

New patients

New clinic patients must be referred by a primary care provider or specialist. The provider should fill out the Pediatric Weight Clinic Referral Form (PDF) and fax it to the Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford Referral Center at (650) 721-2884 or send an electronic referral.

Referral Criteria:

  • BMI ≥ 120% of the 95th percentile BMI for age or ≥ 30.

Parents will be asked to fill out a parent intake questionnaire online in English or Spanish. The questionnaire is also available on paper if requested.

New clinic patients undergo a complete baseline evaluation by a pediatrician or adolescent medicine specialist who specializes in weight management. The effect of future treatments will be compared to this baseline. The evaluation includes:

  • A detailed review of the patient’s medical history.
  • A complete physical examination.
  • Diagnostic testing, as needed.
  • A meeting with a registered dietitian to develop individual dietary and activity goals.
