“I encourage families and caregivers to ask questions. I like to listen.”

Mi acercamiento

I became a pediatric epileptologist–a specialist in epilepsy–because it is a neurological disease that can often be improved or cured. Epileptologists can now access new therapies and clinical trials and can combine traditional treatment with the latest advancements. We can make a difference in a child's quality of life with new medications, vagus nerve stimulators, responsive neurostimulation devices, diet modification, in addition to other treatments. It is most rewarding when a child discontinues or lowers medications after a surgery cures or improves the epilepsy.

Neurological diseases require treatment of the whole patient. I evaluate how a child is doing overall, including their sleep habits, appetite, mood, learning, socialization, and daily activities.

I like to make office visits less stressful. I'll sit on the floor with children and show them the electrodes that might be used during a test or let them handle an implant if they're facing surgery. This helps make a procedure less frightening. I also encourage families and caregivers to ask questions. I like to listen.

I also evaluate and share data, which provides insight and information to a child's larger clinical team. Explaining data to families can also help them make more informed decisions. For example, if I feel that a new medication may be better for a child, I support my recommendation with data.
